Paul Crooks is Britain’s trailblazing expert in tracing African Caribbean Ancestry. Paul traced his family back 6 generations to Ami Djaba who was living in the Krobo Mountain, Ghana... His novel Ancestors first revealed sources for researching slave ownership and Black British family history. His search for his Great, Great, Great, Great Grandmother from West Africa led to national radio interviews and an appearance on ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’. Now a recognised expert in black genealogy, he gives inspirational talks aimed at encouraging people to research their family histories.

Birthing Healthy Babies

Birthing healthy babies is a midwife social enterprise, engaging with women to raise awareness of how to maternity grow, birth and nurture healthy babies. Black women have some of the poorest outcomes for childbearing; positive attention improves these outcomes exponentially. Midwives are well placed to help women achieve quality care outcomes.

Reclaiming spaces: Women of Colour excelling in Creative Industries & Education Sobia Afridi, Brookes Bridges Manager, Oxford Brookes University  Sobia Afridi has worked in higher education for 22 years, on many different projects. This has included events such as the Step Up Conference, an event for Black and Minority Ethnic students with guest speakers who worked to motivate, engage and inspire the students. She was also involved in setting up the Asian young girl’s project to break down the barriers and myths that some Asian parents have and make it clear that higher education is accessible to Pakistani and Bangladeshi girls without compromising their religion. She currently runs a project at the Oxford Central Mosque which aims to improve attainment in Maths and English and to increase students’ confidence at school. Reclaiming spaces: Women of Colour excelling in Creative Industries & Education Sunny Singh, Internationally acclaimed, award-winning writer and Academic SUNNY SINGH is a London-based writer. She has published three critically acclaimed novels and a book of non-fiction about the lives of single women in India. Her latest novel, Hotel Arcadia (Quartet) was described as 'addictive, penetrative' by the Independent. Her short stories have been published by prestigious international literary journals including The Drawbridge and World Literature Today. An expert on Bollywood, she has just finished a book on Amitabh Bachchan commissioned by the BFI for their film star series. Her creative non-fiction and academic writing has been published across the world in key journals and anthologies.
